Samantha Bee makes a revealing comment about her apology for insulting Ivanka

Comedian Samantha Bee said that she regrets calling Ivanka Trump a "feckless c**t" in May, but not for the reason many might have assumed.

"My main regret was diverting attention"

Bee told TheWrap magazine that she wishes she hadn't used the controversial insult because it took away from the political policy she was trying to speak out against.

"I wish that people had been able to see the content that led up to it, actually," Bee said.

"I was speaking very passionately about an idea I felt very deeply about that was getting no coverage," she explained. "My main regret was diverting attention from the topic I was discussing."

"Not that we could have caused everyone to turn their eyes to the story," she concluded. "Of course, news outlets had the option to turn away from the story of a word that I said and turn their focus to the migrant children."

Bee's foul-mouthed commentary centered over a picture that President Donald Trump's daughter had posted on social media of herself and her child. Bee thought it was tone-deaf for her to do so when her father's immigration policies were resulting in children being separated from their families at the border.

“You know, Ivanka, that’s a beautiful photo of you and your child," Bee said at the time, "but let me just say, one mother to another, do something about your dad’s immigration practices you feckless c**t!”

“He listens to you!” Bee added. “Put on something tight and low cut and tell your father to f***ing stop it. Tell him it was an Obama thing and see how it goes.”

The public outrage over the egregious insult led to some advertisers leaving her show, and eventually, Bee apologized for the attack.

"It was inappropriate and inexcusable," Bee said in May. "I crossed a line, and I deeply regret it."

Here's a CNN report about the controversy from May:

Samantha Bee's show, "Full Frontal," is up for four Emmy awards this year.
