OH-Gov: Democratic candidate Richard Cordray again compares Republicans to Nazis

Richard Cordray, the Democratic candidate for governor of Ohio, is under fire for a second video showing him making comparisons of Republicans to Nazis, according to the Washington Examiner.

Cordray, the former director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, has an apparent fondness for Nazi comparisons, which could hurt his campaign against the Republican nominee, Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine.

The Democrat hasn't yet apologized for the first remark, and now a second video has surfaced, showing him comparing the Trump administration to Nazi Germany last month.

What did he say?

A June 25 report pointed out that Cordray compared state and local Republicans to French Nazi collaborators at a March event. A spokesperson for his campaign expressed regret over the comments, which he tried to justify by saying he was repeating someone else's words.

A few days after that, a video surfaced of a June 15 campaign event during which Cordray made an even more pointed comparison of the GOP to Adolf Hitler's genocidal regime.

I will say, that as I said, the tone that you set in government and leadership matters. I mean, right now we have a tone being set by the White House, which is absolutely against everything I've understood for America. You know, trying to find people to scapegoat and blame? That's like Nazi Germany.

I mean, I don't want to make too strong a point about it, and I don't want to compare it to the Holocaust, but it is trying to find people that we can knock down and drag down and blame and say, "It's their fault, not our fault." That never builds people up, to knock somebody else down. When our kids do it on the playground, we tell them, "Stop that."

Campaign impact?

It's unclear what impact Cordray's comments will have on the gubernatorial race, although the comments have been met with unanimous disapproval from various outlets.

The most recent polls are split. An NBC News poll from June 17-22 has DeWine leading by 4 points, while a Suffolk University poll from June 6-11 had Cordray leading by 7 points.
