Nancy Pelosi blasts 'unjust and cruel' California immigration raids

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) blasted last week's Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids in California, calling the raids "unjust and cruel" in a statement issued Wednesday.

What's the history here?

Even though Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf (D) preemptively announced the impending raids on her social media account before they were set to happen, officials were still able to arrest more than 200 illegal immigrants in the area.

Approximately 180 of those arrested "were either convicted criminals, had been issued a final order of removal and failed to depart the United States, or had been previously removed."

Schaaf said that her intention in spreading the information was not to cause a panic among residents, but to protect them, and said that the information warranted a public announcement. Schaaf also made sure to note that that police are prohibited from cooperating with federal immigration officials.

As a result, Thomas Homan — acting ICE director — announced that the Department of Justice would be launching an investigation as to whether Schaaf obstructed justice.

Anything else?

Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced on Wednesday that the Trump administration would sue the state of California over illegal immigration.

The Department of Justice filed a lawsuit Tuesday over the state's "sanctuary city" policies, which deterred the enforcement of federal immigration law.

California officially became a sanctuary state on Jan. 1.

So what did Pelosi say?

Pelosi apparently backed Schaaf's decision to pre-warn residents of the impending raid and also accused the White House of terrorizing "innocent immigrant families."

"Just last week, President Trump decided to terrorize innocent immigrant families in the Bay Area with his unjust and cruel raids," Pelosi said.

She added, "The people of California will not be bowed by the Trump administration's brazen aggression and intimidation tactics. Californians will continue to proudly keep our doors open to the immigrants who make America more American. We will fight this sham lawsuit and will fight all cowardly attacks on our immigrant communities."
