Mitt Romney weighs in on Alabama election, and Roy Moore hits back hard

Trump critic and former presidential candidate Mitt Romney weighed in on the controversial election for Alabama's U.S. Senate seat, and GOP candidate Roy Moore hit him right back.

Twitter feud

"Roy Moore in the US Senate would be a stain on the GOP and on the nation," said Romney on Twitter.

"Leigh Corfman and other victims are courageous heroes," he added. "No vote, no majority is worth losing our honor, our integrity."

Romney was referring to various allegations of sexual harassment against Moore, some of which allegedly happened when the victims were underage. Moore has denied all allegations.

Here's how Moore responded

"Either [Mitt Romney] has lost his courage or he doesn’t care about truth anymore," Moore responded on Twitter. "Sad day!"

"America’s reawakening was led by [President Trump], not you Mitt," he chided, adding a hashtag for Trump's famous campaign slogan, "drain the swamp."

Have the allegations hurt Moore's election campaign?

It is difficult to say definitively if the allegations have hurt Moore's campaign. While some polls showed an initial decline in support for the Republican, more recent polls show him recovering from the slump.

Moore has vehemently and vocally denied the allegations, accusing a cabal of Republican establishment figures, the Democrats and a biased media for spreading the allegations.

Trump appeared to tepidly support Moore after the allegations, but has since been more open in his support.
