Watch: Florida man chases off gun-wielding home intruders with machete

Leandro Mojena-Peralta showed a team of armed burglars that he could effectively defend his home with nothing but a machete despite being outnumbered and outgunned during an attempted attack on Thursday in Sarasota, Florida.

A video posted by the Washington Post on Tuesday shows Mojena-Peralta and an unidentified man sitting at a table, when suddenly Mojena-Peralta stands up and throws a chair at someone off screen. When Mojena-Peralta reappears he is holding a two-by-four, and swinging it at masked men who then come into view.

Mojena-Peralta retreats out of frame as the men, one of them wielding a shotgun, advance. The shotgun-wielding robber appears reluctant to follow Mojena-Peralta any farther and seems to hover around the door Mojena-Peralta escaped through. Meanwhile, the unidentified man is to told lay on the ground by a third robber.

The video shows the shotgun-wielding robber seemingly gathering his bravery, and attempting once again to follow Mojena-Peralta, but he is forced to beat a hasty retreat as Mojena-Peralta re-emerges wielding a large, gleaming machete.

Two of the robbers quickly ditch their weapons and jump the wall to escape Mojena-Peralta's wrath, but the shotgun-wielding robber isn't so lucky.

The camera shows that Mojena-Peralta manages to get the robber on the ground, and keeps a tight hold on his arm as he raises his machete threateningly.

Despite the violent scuffle, no injuries were reported.

According to the Sarasota Country Sheriff's Office, five individuals were arrested in connection with the attempted robbery. The three robbers in the video were identified as Alen Beltran-Vazquez, Angel Cabrera-Basulto and Ronier Jauregui-Lorente. Jorge Valido-Leyva, and Roberto Salcedo-Balanza, two men not seen in the video, were waiting in the escape vehicle, and reportedly helped plan the robbery. All five men remain in Sarasota County Jail without bail.

"Beltran-Vazquez is charged with two counts of armed robbery and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon," said the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office. "Jauregui-Lorente and Cabrera-Basulto are each charged with two counts of armed robbery. Valido-Leyva and Salcedo-Balanza face two counts each of principal to armed robbery."

The Sheriff's office said that investigations are ongoing, and additional charges are pending.

According to the Washington Post, all five robbers reside on the eastern half of Florida. It is unclear why Mojena-Peralta, who lives on the west coast, was allegedly chosen as the victim.
