Lindsey Graham Urges Republicans to Rescind Trump Support: 'If Anybody Was Looking For an Off-Ramp, This Was Probably It

"There'll come a time when the love of country will trump hatred of Hillary."

South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham (R) hasn't exactly kept his disdain for presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump a secret, but now he's calling on the businessman's backers to rescind their endorsements.

Graham, a former GOP presidential candidate himself, urged his fellow Republicans to take back their endorsements of Trump in a recent interview with the New York Times, due at least in part to Trump's controversial rhetoric regarding a federal judge's Hispanic heritage.

"This is the most un-American thing from a politician since Joe McCarthy," Graham told the New York Times. "If anybody was looking for an off-ramp, this was probably it."

"There'll come a time when the love of country will trump hatred of Hillary," Graham added.

Trump has angered many Republicans with his harsh rhetoric surrounding U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel who is presiding over the case involving the presidential candidate's now-defunct Trump University. While he was born in Indiana, Trump has repeatedly said that Curiel's family's Mexican background is an "absolute conflict" in the case.

Trump has also suggested that it would be "possible" that he would be treated unfairly by a Muslim judge as he's called for a moratorium on Muslim immigrants into the U.S.

As TheBlaze previously reported, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus has spoken with Trump regarding his comments.

House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) also decried Trump's comments during a press conference with reporters Tuesday: "Claiming a person can’t do their job because of their race is sort of like the textbook definition of a racist comment. I think that should be absolutely disavowed. It's absolutely unacceptable."

But despite his disdain for Trump's rhetoric, Ryan did not withdraw his support, saying he still has more in common in terms of policy positions with Trump than Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton.
