Exclusive: Filmmaker Reveals the 'Haunting' Moment That Absolutely Stunned Him During Interviews With Infamous Abortion Doctor. Hear It for Yourself.

Infamous ex-abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell uses a verse from the Bible to affirm his innocence in a forthcoming documentary that delves deeply into the grisly crimes that landed him behind bars for life.

David Altrogge, the writer and director of “3801 Lancaster: American Tragedy,” told TheBlaze on Tuesday that he was absolutely stunned when Gosnell began invoking Genesis and Revelation while maintaining his innocence during interview for the film.

"My youngest son asked me, 'Dad, did you do these horrible things that are in the newspaper?'" Gosnell recounts in a clip provided exclusively to TheBlaze. "And I said, 'Alex, I don't want to lie to you. I really have to do a lot of reading to feel comfortable that I, in fact, was on solid ground in my thoughts and my approaches."

But after Gosnell —  who was convicted of first-degree murder in the deaths of three babies at his Philadelphia clinic — read the Bible in its entirety, he says, he became more "comfortable."

"Until I really completed my first Genesis to Revelation reading of the Bible — which I did since I was incarcerated — I really didn't feel as comfortable as I am," Gosnell told filmmakers. "I think it's Genesis 2:7, expresses the breath of life as the beginning of life that God breathed breath — breathed life — into Adam."

He continued, "The Bible, to me, is very clear that life does not happen until breath."

Genesis 2:7 reads: "Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being."

The exclusive clip features Gosnell strongly maintaining his innocence of the crimes he was charged with, despite a jury convicting him in a highly publicized case more than two years ago.

"I very strongly believe in my innocence and there are many people who believe that ... who come to me and say that, 'How could you be this terrible person and people are coming to you for 40 years,'" Gosnell said. "The story just doesn't make sense."

Altrogge told TheBlaze he was absolutely "stunned" when Gosnell began to use the Bible to affirm his innocence.

"My producer and I were on the phone and he started telling us, scripture by scripture, how he believed he was innocent. I was stunned," Altrogge said. "It was definitely not the route I expected him to go. He had obviously spent a lot of time thinking about this. And I think that’s what so haunting about this case."

The filmmaker said that Gosnell isn't simply "some B-movie monster." Talking with the imprisoned abortion doctor, he said, creates some troubling questions in the mind of any interviewer.

"When you talk to him you realize, ‘This is a guy who's been convicted of unspeakable crimes and yet convinced himself that he’s done no wrong…’ How does someone get there?" Altrogge said. "What thoughts or ideologies led him to do the things he did? To me, that’s terrifying."
