Huckabee Blasts Arrest of Defiant Kentucky Clerk: 'Removes All Doubt of the Criminalization of Christianity in Our Country

"The Supreme Court is not the Supreme branch and it's certainly not the Supreme Being."

Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee issued a swift and blistering reaction to the arrest of Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis, saying in a statement that her detainment "removes all doubt of the criminalization of Christianity in our country."

Huckabee said in a statement issued through his campaign that he is "proud" of Davis — a Kentucky clerk who has refused to issue gay marriage licenses — for standing up for her religious convictions, and said that the defense of conscience in the United States is essential.

The former Arkansas governor also warned that citizens should never stand for "judicial tyranny."

"Five, unelected Supreme Court lawyers did not and cannot make law. They can only make rulings," Huckabee said. "The Supreme Court is not the Supreme branch and it's certainly not the Supreme Being."

Huckabee went on to call Davis' arrest "reckless," "appalling" and "out of control" — a decision that he believes undermines the U.S. Constitution.
