Critics Lambaste Kentucky Clerk for Hypocrisy Amid Revelations of Four Marriages and Purported 'Adultery' — but Are They Missing Something Major?

Critics Lambaste Kentucky Clerk for Hypocrisy Amid Revelations of Four Marriages and Purported 'Adultery' — but Are They Missing Something Major?

"I am not perfect. No one is. But I am forgiven and I love my Lord."

The Kentucky clerk who continues to defy a judge's order that she issue gay marriage licenses is being accused of hypocrisy after it was revealed that she was married four times and purportedly had twins out of wedlock after committing adultery.

The new details led prominent gay activist Dan Savage to join a chorus of critics this week in using Jesus' teachings to condemn Rowan County clerk Kim Davis.

Davis, 49, was divorced in 1994, 2006 and 2008, and gave birth to twins after separating from her first husband. U.S. News & World Report noted that her past is "raising questions of hypocrisy and selective application of the Bible to her life."

But there's a key detail in Davis' public statement issued on Tuesday that is worth noting when discussing her past: her conversion to Christianity happened just over four years ago.

"Following the death of my godly mother-in-law over four years ago, I went to church to fulfill her dying wish. There I heard a message of grace and forgiveness and surrendered my life to Jesus Christ," Davis said. "I am not perfect. No one is. But I am forgiven and I love my Lord and must be obedient to Him and to the Word of God."

So according to her personal account, the divorces and pregnancy that critics are citing in their rebukes occurred years before Davis became a Christian and, thus, they occurred well before she started applying the Bible to her life.

Stories of personal conversion are plentiful, with many individuals sharing how their thoughts and actions are wholly transformed after embracing faith. Still, the timeline of events, as well as Davis' conversion itself, have done little to stem the tide of debate.

Savage lambasted Davis on MSNBC on Tuesday, calling her a hypocrite, and pointing to Jesus' teachings to condemn divorce.

"This is a woman who’s been divorced three times and married four times," Savage said, bringing up the birth of her twins. "She’s now onto her fourth husband," Savage said. "Jesus Christ himself in scripture condemned divorce, calls it adultery and forbids is. Jesus Christ himself in scripture says not one word about same-sex marriage."

Watch the segment below:

Mat Staver, who is representing Davis through his conservative Liberty Counsel law firm, told U.S. News & World Report that her marriages are not relevant to the current case.

"It’s not really relevant, it’s something that happened in her past," Staver said. "It’s something that’s not relevant to the issue at hand. She was 180 degrees changed."

Davis has been married twice to her current husband, Ed Davis, according to the Daily Mail.

As TheBlaze previously reported, Davis continues to refuse licenses for gay couples. Staver insisted there are several options available to remedy the situation, and to come to an agreement that is beneficial to all parties.
