St. Louis Police Chief Describes the Wounds of Injured Officers — and When You Hear Them You'll Agree It's 'by God's Grace' Neither Are Dead

"Lucky."

St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar held a press conference Thursday morning to update the media on the status of the two officers shot in Ferguson, Missouri, Wednesday night. And when you hear where the bullets traveled, you'll agree it was "by God's grace" that neither died.

According to Belmar, the the two officers shot during a protest in Ferguson aren't expected to have long-term injuries.

Belmar says one of the officers was shot in his face, just below his right eye and the bullet lodged behind his ear. "That bullet is still with him," he explained. The other officer was shot in his right shoulder, with the bullet leaving out his back.

"So we're lucky, by God's grace, that we didn't lose two officers last night," Belmar added.

The chief also released four photos on the department's Facebook page showing the aftermath of the helmet of the officer shot in the face:

Belmar says the shooting easily could have resulted in two deaths. He cited the two New York City officers who were ambushed in their police cruiser in December.

"We could have buried 2 police officers next week over this," he said.
