Police Can't Explain the Mysterious Voice That They Claim Led Them to the Baby Girl Trapped for 14 Hours in Frigid Waters

The story of an 18-month-old baby who miraculously survived after her mother's vehicle veered off the road and landed upside down in a frigid Utah river has captured headlines in recent days, but there's yet another mysterious element of the story that is gaining some attention.

When cops with the Spanish Fork Police Department in Spanish Fork, Utah, arrived at the scene on Saturday, they claim that they heard the voice of an adult woman pleading for help from inside the vehicle. Acting quickly, they headed into the water to help.

"The four of us heard a distinct voice coming from the car," Officer Jared Warner told CNN. "To me, it didn't sound like a child's voice."

Warner and his three fellow officers rushed to turn the car upright, but when they were able to see inside, they realized that 25-year-old Lynn Groesbeck had died, presumably hours earlier, due to injuries she sustained in the crash.

They then found her 18-month-old baby, Lily, unconscious, but alive, inside of her carseat.

With Groesbeck already dead for many hours before they reached the vehicle, Warner and his fellow officers found themselves confused as to where the voice pleading for their help originated, according to CNN.

"It felt like I could hear someone telling me, 'I need help,'" Officer Bryan DeWitt told KUTV-TV. "It was very surreal, something that I felt like I could hear."

Warner added that the voice clearly said, "Help me" — an account that a third cop, Officer Tyler Beddoes, later corroborated.

"Someone said 'help me' inside that car," he told KUTV-TV, adding that he's been laying awake at night thinking about what unfolded.

"For two nights I've laid awake trying to figure out exactly what it could be," Beddoes added. "All I know is it was there, we all heard it. It was extra motivation."

Lily, who is recovering, reportedly survived for 14 hours hoisted upside down inside of her car seat without food or water.

"Her improvement is astounding. Right now she's watching Dora and singing 'Wheels on the Bus' with grandpa," Lily's aunt, Jill Sanderson, reportedly said. "She is smiling and laughing for family members. We're blown away by Lily's progress and so grateful to her rescuers."

A GoFundMe campaign setup to help the child with a goal of $8,000 has already raised more than $45,000 as of Tuesday morning.
