A new EMC poll of more than 600 GOP voters conducted in the last week of 2014 appears to show some shaky ground under the feet of House Speaker John Boehner. In fact, only 25 percent of those surveyed support Boehner's return to the leadership spot, while 60 percent would rather see someone else as speaker.

Adding to the overwhelming public interest in seeing new leadership in the House, poll respondents also gave Boehner low marks when asked to answer if they felt, "Speaker Boehner has been ineffective in opposing President [Barack] Obama’s agenda." A full 64 percent felt the Ohio congressman has failed to stop Obama and the Democrat's agenda from moving forward.
However, it's not all bad news for Boehner. When asked how they feel about the statement, "I trust House Speaker John Boehner to fight for the issues that are important to most Republicans," a majority (52 percent) agreed that Boehner will fight for them. Only 37 percent disagreed with the statement.
Despite the negative poll numbers, it may not look bad for Boehner to secure re-election. No member of the incoming GOP congressional crew has stepped up to formally challenge Boehner. Additionally, the National Review's Jim Geraghty reviewed the data and declared, "Despite an Ominous New Poll, Speaker Boehner Isn’t Going Anywhere."
At high noon on Tuesday, January 6, the House of Representatives will open the 114th Congress. The first order of business is to elect a Speaker of the House. Will John Boehner get the needed 218 votes to stay in the leadership role? We should know the answer to that on Tuesday.
