Christian Woman Who Faces Brutal Death for Refusing to Renounce Her Faith Gives Birth in Sudanese Prison

Meriam Yehya Ibrahim, the Sudanese woman who was recently sentenced to death by hanging for refusing to renounce her Christian faith, gave birth to a baby girl in prison Monday, according to her lawyers.

Ibrahim, 27, delivered in Omdurman women's prison in Khartoum, Sudan's capital, though her husband, Daniel Wani, a U.S. citizen, was apparently not welcome in the delivery room, CNN reported.

It's unclear what condition Ibrahim and the baby girl are in, but numerous outlets have noted that she delivered one month early and reports indicate that Wani has been denied access to her since the birth.

This news comes as attorney Mohamed Jar Elnabi continues to fight for his client's release.

Ibrahim's 20-month-old son has also been staying with her inside the prison, though the child is permitted to leave at will, according to Elabi. The decision to keep the child with his mother was apparently made by Ibrahim and Wani.

Wani, who is in a wheelchair, depends on his wife "for all details of his life," according to Elnabi.

The birth comes after Ibrahim was reportedly given a chance to change her mind and renounce her faith, but she refused and now faces death by hanging, as TheBlaze previously reported.

"I am a Christian and I never committed apostasy," Ibrahim recently told a judge.

Local media reports indicate that the death sentence won't be carried out until two years after the baby's birth, providing enough time for her to nurse the new child.

Authorities apparently became aware of the woman's faith after her brother complained that she had disappeared for a few years and married a Christian man.

Ibrahim was first arrested and charged with adultery in August 2013 and was later charged with apostasy in February 2014 after she said she was a Christian and not a Muslim, according to the BBC.

She says she became a Christian after her father, a Muslim, abandoned her family when she was 6 years old. Her mother, who was Ethiopian Orthodox, then raised her and she apparently adopted her Christian faith.

Shariah law in Sudan requires that children follow their father's faith. Originally, Ibrahim was sentenced to 100 lashes for adultery, since her marriage to a Christian is not permitted under the law, according to the Daily News.

"The fact that a woman has been sentenced to death for her religious choice, and to flogging for being married to a man of an allegedly different religion is appalling and abhorrent," Amnesty International Sudan research Manar Idriss said in a recent statement. "Adultery and apostasy are acts which should not be considered crimes at all. It is flagrant breach of international human rights law."
