Comedian’s Brutally Honest Interview on Race, Gays Will Likely Offend Some People — and He Doesn’t Seem to Care

Comedian and Author Adam Carolla’s fans expect him to speak freely without the politically correct filter used by many public figures. In a recent interview with left-leaning Salon.com, Carolla tackled controversial subjects like race and allegations that he is anti-gay.

When asked point-blank if he is “anti-gay,” Carolla said you can’t live in Hollywood and have a problem with people just because they are gay. In 2011, he was bashed by the LGBT community for making a joke about Chaz Bono.

“If you can’t work with gay people, you’re gonna have a difficult time in Hollywood. There’s plenty of gay people and they’re in positions above you. You’re not going to get your movie directed,” he said. “I don’t have a problem with it — they’ve just turned into a mafia and demanding everyone apologize for every joke and retract every statement.”

Carolla also argued that the issue of being gay has “turned into something bigger than it is.” He said “nine times out of 10” he doesn’t even know who is or is not gay — and he doesn’t care.

He was then reminded by his interviewer that he is “straight, white and male,” as are many other comedians.

“Do you feel any obligation to help underrepresented comics climb the ladder?” Salon asked.

“You’re presuming I got lifted up the ladder. I don’t feel the need to lift anyone up. If they’re funny, I’ll give them a shot. If they’re not, I won’t. But I don’t have quotas to fill,” Carolla shot back. “I’m fine with the notion that there are genders and races that lean more to comedy — where are the Asian comedians? Maybe there just aren’t any! For that matter, where are all the Jewish roofers? What are female comedians doing about the lack of Jewish roofers? I demand answers!”

On the issue of “privilege,” the comedian asked his interviewer how “Asians passed white people.”

“They got lucky? Someone should look into that, perhaps. I would go ahead and say: The Asians beat the rigged system and did better than white people,” he added. “You don’t think that’d be something to look into? Do you think we decided to rig the system against certain ethnicities?”
