Three Dead After Shootings at Kansas Jewish Centers; Suspect Reportedly Yelled 'Heil Hitler' (UPDATE: 2 Victims Attended a Methodist Church)

UPDATE, 10:45 p.m.:

TheBlaze confirmed with Overland Park Police Sunday night that five people were shot at. Three of those people were killed; the other two were shot at outside the Jewish Community Center but didn't sustain any injuries.

The grandfather and grandson killed in Sunday's attacks at Jewish-affiliated facilities near Kansas City have been identified by family as Dr. William Lewis Corporan and 14-year-old Reat Griffin Underwood, according to the Associated Press, which added that the family is Christian.

Authorities haven't released the name of a woman or girl who was killed minutes later in an attack at a Jewish retirement community, Village Shalom, a few blocks away.

Here's video from KMBC-TV in Kansas City that appears to show the suspect yelling "Heil Hitler!" from the back of a police cruiser:

UPDATE, 7:46 p.m.:

During the Church of Resurrection's service broadcast online Sunday, Pastor Hamilton prayed for "your little ones who've been hurt today" and for the loved ones of those who didn't survive, saying "they're walking with you today in this very hour in paradise."

UPDATE, 7:15 p.m.:

Two of the shooting victims were a 14-year-old boy and his grandfather who attend the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas, church spokeswoman Cathy Bien told the Kansas City Star. TheBlaze spoke with Bien Sunday evening and confirmed the Star's report.

The Rev. Adam Hamilton, the church’s senior pastor, shared the news with church members at the beginning of the evening Palm Sunday service. He said he had been talking to the victims’ family in the hours after the shooting, and they asked him to go through with the Sunday evening worship service.

Police believe the shooter used a shotgun, and possibly a handgun and assault rifle, according to KSHB-TV in Kansas City.

UPDATE, 6:50 p.m.:

The two victims who died in the shooting outside the JCC were fired upon in a car, police said, according to the Kansas City Star.

UPDATE, 6:45 p.m.:

Rabbi Herbert Mandl, a chaplain for the Overland Park Police Department, said the victims included a teenager and an elderly woman.

The shootings, which occurred the night before Passover begins, sound "very much like a hate crime," he told CNN.

"The timing is terrible. The timing is awful," Mandl told CNN. "From what I understand from my contacts, this is a one-person event, and this is hopefully under control now."

UPDATE, 6:32 p.m.:

The two victims at the JCC were males; the victim at Village Shalom was a female, CNN's Prokupecz reported.

Police are investigating the shooting as a possible hate crime, according to CNN crime and justice reporter Shimon Prokupecz.

UPDATE, 6:19 p.m.:

Overland Park police said the initial call came in 1:03 p.m. from the Jewish Community Center, according to KSHB-TV in Kansas City.

One person was killed at the JCC, a second person died at a hospital. Five people were shot at the JCC.

A third person was shot and killed at Village Shalom.

Police added that a suspect is in custody, but his name of the man in his 70s isn't being released. There's no indication the victims knew the suspect.

At least three individuals are dead after shootings at two Jewish facilities in Overland Park, Kansas, a spokesman for the Overland Park Police Department confirmed to TheBlaze.

Two fatalities occurred at the Overland Park Jewish Community Center and one fatality was near assisted living center Village Shalom, according to OPPD spokesman Randy Pommenville.

One suspect is in custody. He reportedly shouted "Heil Hitler" at reporters as he was arrested.

A witness told a Kansas City Star reporter that the suspect was smiling as he was handcuffed.

The Overland Park Regional Medical Center told CBS News that another victim is a 16-year-old male who is in critical condition.

The FBI is at the scene working with local authorities, FBI spokesman Joel Sealer told CNN.
