The final shutoff is effective "probably in March," according to New York Times' David Carr.

The outspoken British host's downfall was his anti-gun stance, The Wire noted according to Variety's Rick Kissell. And Morgan got into his share gun scrapes, speaking out and tweeting his distaste for guns and gun owners frequently.

"Look, I am a British guy debating American cultural issues, including guns, which has been very polarizing, and there is no doubt that there are many in the audience who are tired of me banging on about it," Morgan told Carr.

“That’s run its course and (CNN president) Jeff (Zucker) and I have been talking for some time about different ways of using me.”

The Wire opines that the latter is a "nice excuse, but perhaps the problem isn't that Americans don't want to watch a foreigner; we just didn't want to watch him. After trying to make it work and refusing to admit defeat for two years, CNN finally gave up."

Morgan replaced Larry King in 2011, but his ratings never matched those of his predecessor, The Wire said, adding that last month CNN got the third-worst ratings in its history.
