Watch Michele Bachmann Infuriate Sen. Bernie Sanders During Fiery Debate: ‘That Is Absolutely a Lie’

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) clashed with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) Monday on CNN’s “The Situation Room” as the two disagreed on everything from higher education to raising the minimum wage.

Bachmann argued that the federal government’s role in education has actually increased costs, so now there’s a “trillion dollars in debt outstanding from American kids.”

Sanders told Bachmann she had her facts “backwards.” He then went way off topic.

“The idea that solving the very serious problem of the declining middle class and the growing gap between the wealthy and everybody else, is to do what Bachmann’s colleagues, perhaps yourself — you want to cut Social Security,” Sanders said.

“That is absolutely a lie,” Bachmann replied. “This is the old canard that is trotted out all the time. It’s a lie, let’s face it Sen. Sanders, you shouldn’t be lying about what our position is.”

The Minnesota congresswoman then declared she does not want to cut Social Security, leading to a tense back-and-forth during which Sanders attempted to get Bachmann to answer whether she supports a “chained CPI” or a minimum wage increase.

Bachmann remained elusive and failed to provide a direct answer. She did tell Sanders to “calm down” several times, however.
