One of the Most Important Stories From American History' That You've Probably Never Heard

"You want to know why they are trying to make sure that our veterans are discredited?"

Glenn Beck on Tuesday told his audience what he believes is "one of the most important stories from American history," and predicted that most have "never heard of it."

And this little-known story isn't hundreds of years old, Beck added -- it happened within the last century.

"You want to know why they are trying to make sure that our veterans are discredited? You want to know why they are doing everything they can to get the guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens?" he said. "It's called the Battle of Athens."

Beck told the story of a group of veterans in Athens, Tenn. who acted to prevent local officials from stealing an election for Paul Cantrell and "his political machine, his mob of thugs and thieves" in 1946.

As election day ended, Beck said, the ballot boxes were taken to the local jail where they were typically stuffed with pre-marked ballots. The veterans weren't going to let that happen again, and a shootout emerged between them and the armed sheriff's deputies.

"I've already fought fascism once, I have to fight it here?" Beck said, summarizing the sentiment of those involved.

In the end, Former Tusculum College historian Jennifer E. Brooks wrote, "The McMinn County veterans had won the day in a hail of gunfire, dynamite, and esprit de corps."

Beck told his audience: "Quite honestly, when we are not spending our money on just trying to stabilize the news and everything else, this I am going to make into a mini-series, the Battle of Athens. It is a story that needs to be told, and it is a story that I have been saying for the last few years that we have got to tell."

The story of the Battle of Athens is one of twelve highlighted in Beck's latest book, "Miracles and Massacres."

"They are the true and untold stories of the making of America, and they come all the way from 1781, and the last story is 2001. And they are twelve stories that I thought captured the essence of who we are, both good and bad," Beck told his audience. "What we allowed to happen, what we've turned a blind eye to, will blow your mind. And I don't mean just the bad things - I mean the miracles as well."
