Guess What's Going to Happen to George Zimmerman's Gun

Following George Zimmerman's acquittal, there are many questions surrounding what's next. With Al Sharpton, among others, calling for Justice Department charges and with angst raging in communities across the nation, the  saga is certainly far from over. Among the less talked about elements of the case, though, is the whereabouts of Zimmerman's gun and whether he will be able to, once again, carry it following the trial's conclusion.

These latter elements were answered, in part, over the weekend by his attorney, Mark O'Mara. The gun, a Kel Tec 9 pistol, will potentially be returned to Zimmerman following a decision about his concealed weapons permit, according to Mediaite. While it is possible that the permit could be denied, if it is allowed, O'Mara believes that his client will, indeed, plan to carry again.

In an interview with ABC News, O'Mara discussed the gun, defending his client and noting that, considering the outrage following the case, Zimmerman will likely need the weapon. When asked if the former defendant would, if allowed, once again carry, his lawyer was candid (read the transcript and watch the video).

"Even more reason now, isn’t there?" O’Mara responded. "There are a lot of people out there who actually hate him, though they shouldn’t."

As for those who believe that the gun is the key factor that led to Trayvon Martin's death, the attorney made some additional statements that some will surely see as controversial. He maintained that Zimmerman believes that, had he not been carrying the gun that night, he would potentially be dead.

The weapon, O'Mara said, did not cause the situation to unfold, rather is helped save Zimmerman's life.

"I think that he feels truly in his heart that if he did not have that weapon that night he might not be here," O’Mara explained. "[Zimmerman] would have continued to get beat even though he was screaming for help."

Prosecutors, of course, aren't keen on the gun being returned to his hands.

"The law allows an awful lot of people to carry guns. That doesn't mean they all should," said assistant state attorney Rich Mantei.
