The Great Gypsy': School District Issues Embarrassing Reading List Riddled With Errors

"Hempstead has not had a stable administration for a long time and the kids are suffering."

A Long Island, New York, school district released a summer reading list for its students. While this is a common act on the part of teachers and administrators across the nation, this particular list, distributed by the Hempstead Public Schools, is making headlines, because the document is riddled with spelling errors.

Not one. Not two or even three. But more than 30 blunders -- many of which simple edits should have caught.

Now, before we continue, it's essential to note that all human beings are error-prone, so mistakes can almost always be expected. However in this case, it's somewhat curious that a document being distributed to children would have more than 30 mistakes, particularly when the list is intended to spawn learning (and, more specifically, reading) among those children who receive it.

Some of the issues surround the title of books, while others are merely incorrect author names. Take, for instance, "The Great Gatsby." On the summer reading list, the book is listed as, "The Great Gypsy." A more minor error is author Emily Bronte's name, which is misspelled as Emily Bonte.

You can see the list, below (or read it here):

According to Newsday and News 12 Long Island, these are just a few of the more than 30 errors on the list provided by Hempstead Public Schools.

In a statement, a member of the New York State Department of Education's Board of Regents said the mistakes indicated that a stable administration was essential for children to get a good education. The statement said, "Hempstead has not had a stable administration for a long time and the kids are suffering."

Hempstead Superintendent Susan Johnson didn't immediately return a call for comment.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
