University of Colorado Removes Safety Tip Sheet Advising Rape Victims to Thwart Attack by 'Vomiting or Urinating

After being ruthlessly mocked and ridiculed this week, the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs has taken down its list of safety tips for rape victims. The list advised women to urinate, vomit or inform their attacker that they are menstruating to prevent an assault.

The university is claiming that the list has been "taken out of context."

"The recent circulation of this web page containing information about rape prevention at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs was taken out of context on popular social media sites," the website states.

"The 10 tips were considered last resort options when all other defense methods have been exhausted," the site added. "The ten tips have been removed. We apologize for the miscommunication and any confusion that this page may have caused."

1.    Be realistic about your ability to protect yourself.

2.    Your instinct may be to scream, go ahead!  It may startle your attacker and give you an opportunity to run away.

3.    Kick off your shoes if you have time and can’t run in them.

4.    Don’t take time to look back; just get away.

5.    If your life is in danger, passive resistance may be your best defense.

6.    Tell your attacker that you have a disease or are menstruating.

7.    Vomiting or urinating may also convince the attacker to leave you alone.

8.    Yelling, hitting or biting may give you a chance to escape, do it!

9.    Understand that some actions on your part might lead to more harm.

10.    Remember, every emergency situation is different.  Only you can decide which action is most appropriate.

The tip sheet gained national attention after Colorado Democratic Rep. Joe Salazar asserted that women don't need to carry guns on college campuses because they might accidentally start shooting innocent people they "feel" might rape them. He also said women have "call boxes," "safe zones" and "whistles" to protect them.

Glenn Beck and company mocked the list and Rep. Salazar mercilessly on radio while many others argued the university's list endangers any women who may have actually taken the tips seriously.
