WATCH: Ted Cruz shreds ‘table-pounding’ Dem BS on Kavanaugh

In his opening statement at Judge Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court confirmation hearing, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, called out the Democrats for their clownish obstruction tactics, accusing them of trying to "reverse" the 2016 presidential election by sinking President Trump's nominee.

"I'm sorry that your daughters had to endure the political circus of this morning," Cruz told Kavanaugh as he began. Earlier, Senate Democrats refused to let the hearing proceedings begin, interrupting Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, numerous times and motioning to adjourn. Nearly two dozen Women's March protesters were arrested for disrupting the hearing.

Cruz accused the Democrats in the room of lacking substance to attack Kavanaugh's qualifications for the Supreme Court or his judicial record.

"We're seeing a lot of table-pounding this morning. The Democrats are focused on procedural issues because they don't have substantive points strong enough to derail this nomination," Cruz said. "So they're trying to divert everyone with procedural issues.

Cruz said that the Democrats' complaints over Kavanaugh documents being kept from the Senate by executive privilege don't pass "serious scrutiny." He explained that the documents from Kavanaugh's time as a staff secretary to the White House counsel office in the George W. Bush administration are not authored by Kavanaugh, are unrelated to his judicial views, and are irrelevant to his confirmation.

"The multiple motions we've seen from Democrats ... that reveals the whole joke. Their objective is delay," Cruz continued.

"I believe this fight is nothing more and nothing less than an attempt by our Democratic colleagues to relitigate the 2016 election."

"I've said a number of times that Justice Gorsuch's nomination and Judge Kavanaugh's nomination have almost a super-legitimacy in that they were ratified, they were decided, by the American people in a direct vote in 2016. And so the Democratic obstruction today is all about trying to reverse that election."
