Watch: Rep. Thomas Massie TORCHES leadership’s swampy farm bill shenanigans

Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., took to the House floor Wednesday to protest House leadership’s efforts to hide language squashing debate on U.S. military involvement in Yemen inside a completely unrelated piece of agricultural legislation.

“Just when you thought Congress couldn’t get any swampier,” Massie said, “we continue to exceed even the lowest expectations.”

While the effort to hide war powers language inside an agricultural bill may seem absurd, Massie — who also called out the move on social media earlier — pointed out that this wasn’t the first time that House leadership had used these kinds of tactics to avoid talking about U.S. involvement in Yemen.

“Even if you think we should be involved in Yemen, even if you think soldiers should go there, even if you think we should give the bombs to Saudi Arabia to drop on civilians,” Massie urged his colleagues, “you shouldn’t want to sneak that into an unrelated bill.”

Massie said this kind of legislative manipulation violates the constitution and sets a “dangerous precedent” by keeping the House from debating its constitutional duties for the rest of this congressional session.
