Vote alert: Kill amendment to reform food stamps with stronger work requirements, upgraded job training

This vote was on a motion to table (kill) an Amendment to the 2018 Farm Bill. 

On June 28, 2018, the United States Senate voted 60-38 to table an amendment offered by Sens. Mike Lee, R-Utah, and Ted Cruz, R-Texas, to strengthen work requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps.  

The amendment would have strengthened the work requirements by addressing the loopholes created by state-level work waivers while ending the treatment of able-bodied adults without dependents as a separate population from other people able to work. It also provided resources for job training and assistance programs to get people back into the workforce.  

Our welfare programs should be focused on helping people back into the workforce, not trapping them in dependency. And with an ever-increasing national debt now over $20 trillion, meaningful reforms to federal entitlement programs are long overdue.  

The Senate voted to table (kill) the amendment by a vote of 60-38 on June 28, 2018, at 2:21 p.m.
