British judge wants to ban long pointy knives

Luton Crown Court Judge Nic Madge has asked the British Parliament to ban sharp kitchen knives, or at least to replace their design with one that has “rounded ends,” the Telegraph reported on Saturday.

Outlawing sharp knives, of course, would not solve the issue of knife-related crime in Bedfordshire, since it is not the law-abiding citizens who are committing the crimes. But rather than admit the failure of weapons bans to significantly affect violent crime in England, Madge suggested further bans that would make basic kitchen utensils illegal. He even was quoted as suggesting police “organise a programme whereby the owners of kitchen knives, which have been properly and lawfully bought for culinary purposes, could be taken somewhere to be modified, with the points being ground down into rounded ends.”

Never mind that removal of all sharp knives would make cooking anything larger than a potato very difficult. Madge laughably argues that domestic chefs use the sharp point of an 8- to 10-inch cooking knife “rarely, if at all.”

Perhaps Madge should attempt to cook dinner with the sole aid of butter knives before declaring all sharp knives unnecessary.
