California Gov. Newsom: toxic masculinity, xenophobia will lead GOP to become a third party

The Democrat says President Trump is selling rural communities a 'complete bill of bullsh*t'

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) says the Republican Party has embraced toxic masculinity and xenophobia, and predicts the supposed trends will cause the GOP to deteriorate to third-party status in coming years.

What are the details?

In an interview with Axios which aired on HBO Sunday, Newsom was asked about a past statement he made regarding toxic masculinity, where he said, "The most dangerous words in the English language are 'man up,' 'be a man,' and 'don't be a sissy.'"

Newsom stood by his remarks, explaining that "the most interesting part" of the 2016 election was "the number of white men of working age that aren't working any longer." The governor went on to say that he respects and cares for rural voters but believes they've been sold a bill of goods by President Donald Trump.

"They're not being respected. They're being lied to. They're not connected to any movement — this guy, you think Trump cares about them?" Newsom told the interviewer. "They're getting a completely raw deal," the Democrat continued, "They've been sold a complete bill of bullshit."

Gov. Newsom then began giving his own assessment of the GOP. "Here's the real story," he said. "The Republican Party was walked off a cliff; they're third-party status. That's exactly what Donald Trump is doing and [Senate Majority Leader] Mitch McConnell — who's completely complicit — is doing to the Republican Party nationally.

"They don't even know what's about to hit them," he continued. "I honestly am empathetic towards what they're about to experience, which is a profound demise because of their own making. And until you have some courageous Republicans that stand up and actually make an argument for conservatism...they are finished."

Newsom added, "They have no governing philosophy. They have no value system that's interesting except fear of others, and those others are going to be a majority, so wake up."
