Glenn: Trump is 'getting played' by Democrats

What happened?

President Donald Trump had dinner with Democrat leaders last night and chatted about tax reform, border security and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, an Obama-era program shielding around 800,000 people from deportation. Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell were not there.

Trump said this morning that “no deal” had yet been reached and called for “massive border security” as part of any agreement.

Who’s happy?

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, according to a statement from their offices saying that Trump had agreed to “enshrine” DACA into law. “President and the leaders agreed to pair the bipartisan DREAM Act with some border security, excluding the wall,” a source familiar with the meeting told Politico.

Trump last week sponsored a Democrat plan to raise the debt ceiling with a bill to fund the government for three months along with a measure allocating $15 billion to hurricane relief, stunning Republicans.

Who’s really, really not happy?

Trump voters, immigration hawks and conservatives in general who want to ensure border security.

Glenn’s take:

Is bargaining with Democrats acceptable? Absolutely – if you use bipartisan bargaining to help keep your promises to American voters. Making a deal isn’t bad if you get something good out of it, but Trump hasn’t done that. Democrats will keep promising to work on border security, but Trump has no guarantee.

“Somebody’s getting played,” Glenn said. “It is not Chuck and it is not Nancy.”
