How likely is it that a Republican Congress and president will manage to repeal Obamacare, reform taxes and get anything else done? Rachel Bovard, senior director policy at the Conservative Partnership Institute, joined Monday’s “The Morning Blaze with Doc Thompson” to analyze the new dynamic in Congress as the conservative bloc grows stronger.
Conservatives and libertarians have been waiting for nearly a decade for the opportunity to change policy, but the Trump administration has struggled even to keep Republicans’ promises to repeal the Affordable Care Act and reform the Veterans Administration. When it comes to the VA, President Donald Trump has attempted to make changes holding incompetent VA doctors accountable, but the administration hasn’t yet made deep enough reforms to the system.
Bovard explained the political processes and steps that Republicans will need to take in order to keep their promises to voters. Obamacare is still hanging over their heads, making it difficult to get anything else done.
“That’s the way you fix things in Washington; you just assume that the problem is money, and you just throw more money at it,” Bovard said. “The problem is Republicans ran for eight years on some really key priorities, including repeal of Obamacare … I think a lot of the pressure is on Republicans to get those things done before they have the capital to move on to other issues.”
