Cleaning crews reportedly discovered a dead fetus in an American Airlines lavatory toilet on Tuesday at New York City's LaGuardia Airport, according to WNBC-TV.

What are the details?

The incident reportedly occurred on American Airlines flight 1942, which departed Charlotte, North Carolina, Monday night and arrived a couple of hours later in New York.

According to WNBC, cleaning crews made the grisly discovery early Tuesday morning during a routine cleaning.

A spokesman for American Airlines said that the incident is under investigation.

"As we continue to learn more about this tragic and sensitive situation, we are actively cooperating with law enforcement in their investigation," the statement read. "Please contact law enforcement for additional information."

The incident did not have any "major impact" on the airline's morning operations, according to the station.

What else?

Investigators have said that the fetus was about five to six months in development, and that the local medical examiner's office will conduct an autopsy for more conclusive details about the fetus, including how it died.

A statement from the city medical examiner's office read, “The OCME can confirm we’re investigating what we believe to be a human fetus found deceased on an airplane. We will release determination when investigation is complete.”

The station reported that the Queens, New York, district attorney's office is also investigating the incident in addition to Port Authority Police Department.
