Trump tweets more details on historic North Korean announcement - here's what he said

President Trump offered more details about the announcement about a meeting with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un through his official social media account, and a statement through his press secretary.

Here's what he said

"Kim Jong Un talked about denuclearization with the South Korean Representatives, not just a freeze. Also, no missile testing by North Korea during this period of time," he said.

"Great progress being made but sanctions will remain until an agreement is reached," he added. "Meeting being planned!"

The announcement surprised the media, as the president chose to sneak out of his office to tell reporters that there would be an important statement released from South Korea at 7 PM.

It was then announced that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had contacted the president and asked for a meeting about denuclearization.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders released a statement saying that Trump had accepted the invitation from Kim Jong Un to meet, but that the time and place of the meeting would be determined soon.

She added that the United States looks "forward to the denuclearization of North Korea," but that the sanctions imposed on the "hermit kingdom" would continue in the meantime.

The problem of the North Korean regime has heightened during Trump's presidency, but it is a result of failed diplomacy for decades. Kim Jong Un has become increasingly threatening and belligerent in praising their missile tests which have alarmed South Korea and their regional neighbors.
