The Pope sustains a black eye and a bloodied brow — this is how it happened

According to Reuters, Pope Francis sustained minor injuries after he lost his balance on the popemobile and struck his face.

In video footage, which showed the incident, the pope can be seen striking his face on a vertical support bar, after the popemobile had to make an abrupt stop while on a trip through Cartagena, Colombia.

The Vatican revealed that the 80-year-old pope bruised his cheekbone and eyelid. A few drops of blood were noticeable on his papal cassock.

His injuries were treated with ice, and the pope was not seriously injured.

During an interview with reporters, the pope later joked that he had been punched.

"I was punched!" Pope Francis quipped.

Immediately after, he added, "I'm fine."

Greg Burke, a spokesperson for the pope, said "The pope is fine. He injured his left cheekbone and eyelid."

Pope Francis, before becoming the pope, worked as a night club bouncer in Argentina.

Pope Francis' admission came during a 2013 Mass where he told congregants about his former occupation.

According to NBC's "Today," the pope described some of his other former jobs, which also included chemistry lab work and teaching.
