Rush Limbaugh: Climate change alarmists use hurricane panic to further agenda

Rush Limbaugh, nationally syndicated conservative radio host, told listeners on Tuesday that he believes that climate change alarmists are using panic surrounding Hurricane Irma — which has the state of Florida in its sights — as a tool to further their agenda. And according to Limbaugh, they're getting help from the "drive-by media."

Limbaugh's take

Limbaugh prefaced his segment by noting that he's no meteorologist but still has a theory behind hurricane panic. He also exhibited a skeptical attitude toward weather forecasts that are sometimes 10 days out.

"The reason that I am leery of forecasts this far out, folks, is because I see how the system works,” Limbaugh said.

Limbaugh addressed the "abundance of people" who believe climate change is real, and added that those people likely feel validated by Al Gore's comments that hurricanes will increase in both frequency and danger in the coming years.

Shutting down Gore's claims of increasingly intense hurricane seasons, Limbaugh noted that Hurricane Harvey was the first hurricane to make landfall in the U.S. in 12 years.

"There haven’t been more hurricanes and they’re no more dangerous than any others in previous years," he said.

'Hell-bent' on climate change

"There is a desire to advance this climate change agenda, and hurricanes are one of the fastest and best ways to do it," Limbaugh said.

"You have people in all of these government areas who believe man is causing climate change, and they’re hell-bent on proving it, they’re hell-bent on demonstrating it, they’re hell-bent on persuading people of it," he added.

Limbaugh reasoned that the fear and panic instilled by the media — and by people like Gore — actually benefits retailers and creates a media circuit in which people panic over the forecasts and then return to the media to receive a continuous stream of updates about the extreme weather in question.

About the circuit, Limbaugh said:

Here comes a hurricane, local media goes on the air, "Big hurricane coming, oh, my God! Make sure you got batteries. Make sure you got water. It could be the worst ever. Have you seen the size of this baby? It’s already a Cat 5. Oh, my God, oh, my God, it’s bigger than the island of Haiti. Oh, my God." People run to the stores, they stock up on everything, and they hoard. And they end up with vacant stores, nothing there. And it’s a big success. TV stations got eyeballs, the advertising businesses have sold out of business, gotta restock and the cycle repeats.

Not the first time he has made the connection

In 2016, Limbaugh also stated that panic-inducing coverage of hurricanes was part of a left-wing plan that used the National Hurricane Center as a conduit to frighten U.S. citizens into believing in climate change.

During an October radio show, Limbaugh said, "It’s in the interest of the left to have destructive hurricanes because then they can blame it on climate change, which they can desperately continue trying to sell."
