Poll: Obama to leave office as the most admired man in America

President Barack Obama will leave office as the most admired man in America, according to a new Gallup poll.

Gallup asked Americans who their first and second choices were for the man whom they admire most. Obama earned 22 percent of the combined responses, followed by President-elect Donald Trump at 15 percent.

Gallup noted, “Incumbent presidents typically win the distinction — in the 70 times Gallup has asked the question, the president has won 58 times.”

Following the president and the president-elect, Pope Francis earned the distinction of the third-most admired man by Americans. Former Democratic presidential candidate Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders came in fourth.

The Rev. Billy Graham, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Dalai Lama, former President Bill Clinton, billionaire Bill Gates and Vice President-elect Mike Pence also top the list of the men most admired by Americans.

Obama has earned first place in Gallup’s poll nine times, behind only former President Dwight Eisenhower, who won 12 times.

Gallup also asked Americans who their first and second choices were for the woman whom they admire most. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton won 12 percent of the combined responses, followed by first lady Michelle Obama at 8 percent.

Clinton and Obama were followed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Oprah Winfrey, Ellen DeGeneres, Queen Elizabeth of Great Britain, human rights activist Malala Yousafzai, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
